  2. Guide to Using CPAP

I can't find distilled water. What should I use in my CPAP machine?

Boiled and cooled water, bottled purified water, or tap water (as a last resort) can temporarily replace distilled water.

Using distilled water in your CPAP machine is ideal because it prevents mineral buildup and keeps your machine and humidifier chamber clean. However, if you're unable to find distilled water due to a shortage, here are some alternatives and considerations:

Temporary Alternatives to Distilled Water

  1. Boiled and Cooled Water

    • Boil tap water for 1-3 minutes (longer if at a higher altitude).
    • Allow it to cool completely before using it in your CPAP machine.
    • Note: This won't remove minerals, so you'll need to clean the humidifier chamber more frequently.
  2. Bottled Water

    • Use purified or filtered bottled water if available.
    • Avoid "spring water" or "mineral water" as they contain minerals that can cause scaling.
  3. Tap Water (as a last resort)

    • While tap water is generally safe for short-term use, it contains minerals and impurities that can lead to residue and bacterial growth.
    • Be diligent about cleaning your humidifier chamber daily if you use tap water.

Cleaning Tips for Non-Distilled Water

  • Daily Cleaning: Empty the humidifier chamber every morning and rinse it with warm, soapy water.
  • Weekly Cleaning: Use a vinegar and water solution (1:1 ratio) to remove mineral deposits. Rinse thoroughly to avoid residual vinegar smell.
