Why tap water is unsuitable for CPAP use.
Using tap water in your CPAP machine is generally not recommended for several reasons:
1. Mineral Build-Up
- Tap water often contains minerals like calcium and magnesium. When heated, these minerals can leave deposits (scale) in the water chamber, which are difficult to clean and may reduce the machine's efficiency.
2. Microbial Growth
- Tap water can harbour microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and mould. These can grow in the humid environment of your CPAP machine, potentially leading to respiratory issues or infections.
3. Impurities
- Tap water may contain impurities like chlorine, fluoride, and other chemicals. These can be harmful if inhaled over time and may also cause unpleasant odours.
4. Shortened Lifespan of Equipment
- The buildup of minerals and contaminants can damage your CPAP machine's water chamber, tubing, and other components, leading to more frequent replacements and higher costs.
5. Irritation and Health Risks
- Using water that isn’t sterile or distilled can cause irritation in your airways and lungs, especially for people with sensitive respiratory systems.
Recommended Solution:
Always use distilled water in your CPAP machine. It’s free from minerals and impurities, ensuring your machine runs efficiently and safely while reducing the risk of health complications.
If you're in a pinch and don't have distilled water, use bottled water or boiled tap water (cooled to room temperature) as a temporary measure, but replace it with distilled water as soon as possible.
